Although it has been a popular topic for research and debate during the past decades, gender has become a paramount topic in public and academic debate in recent years. Removing barriers to women’s success in various fields is highly important in achieving gender equality and furthering women’s empowerment. We have witnessed major progress on a worldwide scale during recent years, as increasingly more women enter uncharted territories and start getting recognition for their groundbreaking work. From IMF’s Christine Lagarde and Kristalina Georgieva to the three Romanian women included in MIT’s 35 Innovators Under 35, women are pioneering sectors of activity previously dominated by men, and paving the way for future generations.

The intersection of communication and gender has been a major concern for both research domains, theorizing communication of gender, gendering communication, feminine and masculine communication styles and contents; the gendered dimension of communication in negotiating identities translated into studies tackling femininity, as well as research endeavors dealing with masculinity.  

As idea hubs, universities have the responsibility of advancing the gender conversation and bridging perspectives from different disciplines and areas of research and practice. Therefore, Communicating Gender aims to provide a platform for academics, researchers, professionals, and students to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and establish relationships to advance the discipline and the professions related to the subject matter. We invite scholars across different disciplines to submit papers and panels on gender and communication, and tackle this generous theme around various topics, including but not limited to the following:

• Gender and political discourse
• Media and communication
• Social media and gender
• Intersectionality and discourse
• Feminism(s) and social movements
• Institutions and gender mainstreaming
• Gender in organizations
• Gender and science(s)
• Leadership and work/ life balance
• Men’s role in the gender equality conversation
• Gender-based violence

Selected papers will be included in the conference proceedings volume.

The conference is organized by the Center for Research in Communication and Social Innovation (CoRE) of the Faculty of Political, Administrative, and Communication Sciences (Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca), with support from Ratiu Democracy Centre.

The working languages of the conference are English and Romanian. The event will take place at FSPAC2 (Topaz).
